La Fototeca de Panamá es una fundación sin fines de lucro creada en el 2018 por iniciativa del fotógrafo Ricardo López Arias, la curadora Maylin Pérez Parrado y el arquitecto Erik Wolfschoon. Su misión es contribuir al desarrollo de la fotografía en Panamá como forma de expresión de la cultura nacional; promover el patrimonio fotográfico que contiene dentro de su colección; y divulgar la producción fotográfica nacional e internacionalmente, resaltando sus valores, estableciendo diálogos y fortaleciendo el aprendizaje entre los fotógrafos y el público en general.

La fotografía es una fuente de documentación, estudio y recreación de la memoria colectiva de cualquier sitio, país o región. La historia de la fotografía panameña ha sido contada de una manera fragmentada y aislada, permeada de grandes esfuerzos y motivaciones personales. Las investigaciones, en su mayoría, se enfocan en la revisión de acontecimientos y personajes destacados mediante un estudio cronológico y no un análisis crítico. Los archivos fotográficos y documentos históricos se concentran principalmente en manos de la esfera privada, lo cual limita en gran medida su alcance, uso y difusión.

Pese a los reconocidos esfuerzos por consolidar la historia y evolución de la fotografía en Panamá, no existe aún una institución que estudie, unifique, promocione y salvaguarde en un mismo espacio archivos fotográficos, documentos históricos e impulse el desarrollo de proyectos contemporáneos. Se hace imprescindible la creación de la Fototeca de Panamá, un centro de estudios fotográficos de carácter local abierto a colaboraciones internacionales.

Fue uno de los precursores de la fotografía en Panamá desde el último tercio del siglo XIX hasta la primera mitad del siglo XX.
